What the Dutch saw and lived in Turtle Bay back then, no one else did. Colonized by the French in the 17th century, the area was transformed into an embattled fort and the remnants are what were once an arsenal for the French army. From the elevated land where we were standing by the ancient stone wall, once an observation point, we could visualise soldiers watching out for enemy ships entering the island through nearby Tombeau Bay.
A stunning sunset over the small beach cove, the soothing view of the turquoise sea, and the sound of gentle waves caressing the beach, added to the feeling of mystery, serenity, seclusion, and romance of the place. We dared to dream: could we make this moment into an eternity? An eternity that everyone could discover and in which they could find solace… A Luxury Boutique Resort & Wellness was thus born, Le Jadis.
Le Jadis embodies the continuity of the civilization that was once there, and its evolution. The ancient stone wall on the beach, though kept intact, has been moved further inland in order to put an end to the sand erosion that it was causing, and give back to the beach today what was taken away from it over time. As for the newly-erected walls of the resort, they immortalize the cut stones of the colonization era while embracing today’s technique of handcrafting stones. Featuring distinctive thatched roofs, the architecture of the resort reflects a melting pot of cultures from Asia, Europe and Africa, thereby perfectly encapsulating how Mauritius has evolved since its first colonization.
Nestled near the Balaclava-Turtle Bay Marine Park, the first of only two national marine parks of Mauritius, in the quietude of Balaclava, Le Jadis is the ideal hideaway for those who seek refuge from crowds and noise. It is located a mere twenty minutes from the tourist village of Grand Baie, and the Mont Choisy Le Golf estate, as well as 45 minutes from the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International airport.
The award-winning luxury property, previously named Angsana Balaclava Mauritius, is managed by Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts. Blissfully intimate, timelessly elegant, inspiringly romantic, and reflecting a strong focus on thoughtful design as well as green features, Le Jadis is paving the way for a very unique resort lifestyle in Mauritius.
